Co-Learning
Co-learning is MISI’s practice of convening students, community members, practitioners, and scholars to teach and learn from one another in equal measure.
Through convening, teaching, and fellowship, we understand expertise as distributed across a room rather than concentrated at its front. This requires resisting the assumption that knowledge flows only one way, from institution to community, from teacher to student. We bring substantial expertise to these encounters, but we also arrive with much to learn: about lived experience, local context, and the everyday work of building trust that neither classroom nor research paper can fully capture. This bi-directionality, an embrace of not-knowing alongside expertise, is what distinguishes how we convene, teach, and grow together.
Convening
MISI convenes through a range of gatherings designed to bring researchers, practitioners, and community members into shared conversation.
Teaching
Media Innovation & Social Impact Practicum (MiSIP) at Boston University is a practice-oriented course that bridges academic study and real-world engagement by placing students directly alongside community partners.
Fellowship
By bringing together researchers, practitioners, and community leaders with diverse perspectives, our year-long fellowship program creates space for new collaborations and insights that wouldn’t emerge in isolation.
