Pedagogical Intermission: A Lesson Plan for Bertolt Brecht’s Revisions

Bertolt-Brecht

Bertolt Brecht.

Chapter 4 provides a lesson plan for teaching Bertolt Brecht’s adaptation of the noh play Tanikō (The Valley Hurling) for his lehrstück or learning play Der Jasager with a score by Kurt Weill in 1930. When the play failed to meet Brecht’s pedagogical and political goals – when it failed to teach the right kind of submission and consent – he revised it at least twice and then asked that the versions be performed together. They never were in his lifetime.
