Installation Steps

The installation process is divided into two main parts. Although setup is typically easier on Windows, our team also uses Mac, and everything runs perfectly well on both systems. You will find downloadable documents to guide you through each step.

1. First of all, you will have to prepare your environment, for this:

  • Download and install Java, Node.js, and Grunt,
  • Download Android Studio,
  • Add adb to your PATH,
  • Download and install Application Designer (this step require a GitHub account).

All detailed instructions for these steps can be found in the Mac installation guide and the Windows installation guide (to come).

2. Install the app on your android device:

Once your computer is ready, you can install AnthroCollect on your Android device:

All detailed instructions for these steps can be found in the app installation guide.

3. (facultative) Connect the tablet to your server:

This step is optional and depends on your data workflow. The data will always remain stored on your tablet regardless. In this document, you will find instructions for:

  • Connecting the app to your server for the first time,
  • What to do when you update your server and need to reinstall everything (follow those steps closely or you might end-up in the “loop of hell”): when you make major updates to your server, such as by adding new forms or making structural changes, you will need to do a full synchronization. This process requires a stable and good internet connection, as it will erase the local data on the tablet an re-download all data from the server (make sure all the data are synchronised! but we will talk about all of that in the User Guide). If your project includes a large number of photos (as ours does), this step can take some time. Be sure to plan accordingly and perform the update in a location with reliable connectivity.
