MATERIALS for MAKING a MASK

SUPPLIES:

  • Paste (see recipe below)
  • Piece of cardboard (@ 10” x 12”)
  • Newspaper (@ 4 full sheets)
  • Brown paper grocery bag or equivalent amount of brown Kraft paper
  • Tissue paper (@ 6 sheets)
  • Masking tape
  • Scissors
  • Acrylic paint
  • Sewing elastic (1/2 cm – 1 cm wide)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Prepare paste. I like to use flour paste because it’s inexpensive and non-toxic, it has a pleasant, gelatinous texture for sculpting and layering and, with a little white glue added, it has sufficient strength for creating a durable mask.

 PASTE RECIPE*:

  1. Whisk together 1/4 cup white flour with 3 cups cold water in a saucepan.
  2. Whisk mixture on medium heat until it comes to a boil.
  3. Remove from heat.
  4. Cool (completely or to lukewarm).
  5. Pour into a plastic container.
  6.  Stir in a approximately 2 tablespoons of white glue.

*This paste has the best texture when used fresh, but will keep in the fridge for a week. If left out, mould will form.
