Installing Linux

  1. Get VirtualBox manager, a tool used to install virtual operating systems on your computer. Download the latest version here.
  2. Download Xubuntu version 16.04.03 mirror.us.leaseweb.net/…/xubuntu-16.04.3-desktop-amd64.iso (Use this version for working with ROS Kinetic).
  3. Next you have to setup the virtual box. Open the app and create a new virtual box by clicking in the “New” icon. Pick a name for the system, choose “Linux” for type and “Ubuntu 64-bit” for version. For memory, choose about 4GB (4096MB) of RAM. For disk drive select create a virtual disk now. Select VDI for hard disk file type,  dynamically allocate 15GB or more. For memory use a minimum of 1GB (1024MB). After, open the new virtual box you have created. Select the disk image you just downloaded as the installation disk and click start.
  4. Click your preferred language and select install Xubuntu. Check the box “install updated while installing Xubuntu”. Then click erase disk and install Xubuntu, install now and finally continue. Select the New York region. Select your keyboard layout and finally fill out the fields in the last step.
  5. On the VM in the Devices tab select bidirectional for the shared clipboard and drag and drop. Next you will need to install ROS Kinetic.
