March 7, 2018

Dear Colleagues,

Hope this finds you warm as we prepare for another nor’easter this week!  I hope that you and the families you work with are managing despite the storms, power losses, and other disruptions due to the severe recent storms!

Regional meetings will be held over the next few weeks and I look forward to seeing many of you there as well as at the next statewide meeting in Marlboro on March 15th.  Also on the calendar for this month is our next Foundations of School Nursing Practice in MA conducted by SHIELD!  As you know this course includes four days of lecture, online and hands-on training for nurses new to school nursing in MA.  If you know someone interested in being a school nurse (or being licensed as a school nurse in MA), please encourage them to register for this course as soon as possible.  Beginning this summer, this program will also include an introduction to SBIRT for all newly hired school health personnel who will be participating in the SBIRT screening process.  And don’t forget the Racial Equity in School Health: A Groundwater Approach conference scheduled for Tuesday, March 27th in Lowell.  We encourage you and all of your school team to attend this workshop or the one scheduled for Tuesday, May 15th in Norton.

Please stay warm and dry over the next few days!  Thanks for all you do – every day!

SUBSTANCE USE PREVENTION AND SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL LEARNING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, PDP, AND CERTIFICATION OPPORTUNITY FOR GRADES 6-9:

A free one-day evidence-based training equips Teachers, Nurses, or other school personnel with evidence-based training, curriculum, a Native American supplement, and student materials. It enables Teachers to offer a classroom program that has been shown to help prevent opioid misuse among high risk youth. For example, when it is taught to middle school youth, their rates of substance misuse are significantly lower as they become young adults. LifeSkills Training© also aligns with positive educational outcomes and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) skills. Please visithttp://www.cvent.com/d/74q78p/6T to see the series of middle school regional training options and registration link for this Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and  Massachusetts Department of Public Health-sponsored opportunity. If you have questions, please contact Kathleen.Herr-Zaya@state.ma.us  or 617.624.5143.

HEALTHY EATING AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY (HEPA) ADVOCACY TRAINING:

Since November 2016, the Massachusetts YMCAs in partnership with the Massachusetts Afterschool Partnership (MAP) have been leading a Child Obesity Campaign to incorporate Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) Standards into Early Education and Afterschool programs overseen by the Department of Early Education and Care (EEC).  With that being said, we are hosting a Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) Advocacy Training on April 11th at the Best Western in Marlborough! We would be delighted if you could either attend or distribute the registration link to your networks! There is no cost to attend and lunch will be provided!

The link to register is: https://kmroycroft.wufoo.com/forms/x129f41y1wi1h0n/

At this training, a legal consultant from D.C. with expertise in advocacy for non-profits will be flying in to teach folks how to utilize non-lobbying tactics become engaged advocates in their work and how to advocate on behalf of children’s health in the state. We will also be hosting breakout sessions on how to skillfully leverage CACFP, how to Incorporate HEPA into OST with real-life examples from the field, and how to build momentum for HEPA by engaging families/linking schools and OST.  The promotional flyer is attached. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about the training, registration, or our campaign!
