MC795: The Health of Adolescents and Emerging Adults

Adolescence is a critical period in the life course for health promotion, prevention, and intervention. It is a time when many young people experience vast developmental, social, and environmental changes while learning to navigate their health and adapt to new challenges; it is also a time when many diseases and disorders onset. In this course, students will learn to apply a developmental and health equity lens to public health research and practice to improve the lives of diverse adolescents and emerging adults. Students will gain foundational knowledge of frameworks and approaches in adolescent health, skills to critically evaluate public health research, and practical experience applying their learning to a project.

SB747: Gun Violence and Community Health Equity

Gun violence is a public health crisis in the U.S. that disproportionately affects communities of color. This community-partnered course brings students to the frontlines of efforts to prevent gun violence and address its traumatic aftermath, focusing on Massachusetts as a case study. Students review the epidemiology of gun violence, study structural underpinnings, learn directly from community organizations, and develop methodological skills in causal inference and quantitative evaluation. For their final deliverable, students partner with a community-based organization on an applied research proposal or analysis product.
