Cities shape health, to the advantage of some residents and the detriment of others. The Research on Innovations for Safety and Equity (RISE) Lab at BU School of Public Health uses community-engaged data analysis to investigate the root causes of urban health disparities and identify solutions. We are especially focused on firearm violence and structural racism. Our work has informed policymaking in U.S. cities and has been covered by outlets like Newsweek, The New York Times, and CNN. The principal investigator of RISE Lab is Dr. Jonathan Jay, Assistant Professor of Community Health Sciences at BUSPH.

RISE Lab is supported in part by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) 1K01MD016956, “Addressing structural racism to reduce racial disparities in youth firearm violence” (PI: Jay). Previous support came from the Boston University Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) 1UL1TR001430.
