Deanna Sarsour

Deanna Sarsour completed her project at the East Boston Neighborhood Health Center and focused on the need for culturally competent educational materials for patients. Deanna specifically looked at resources pertaining to self-monitored blood pressure monitors. She says about her project:

“The goal of this project was to improve health equity in the East Boston community through engaging patients in their treatment by creating culturally competent information sheets on hypertension and supplying them with self-monitoring blood pressure monitors (SMBP) across the health clinic. Qualitative data was collected by conducting interviews with the head nurses across the clinic, literature reviews and patient surveys regarding their preference in handouts. We found that patients enjoyed reviewing hypertension materials in the form of a booklet with shorter sentences and more visuals/diagrams, which aligned with the literature and nurse’s feedback.”
