Chinyere Okafor
Dr. Chinyere G. Okafor is a Professor of English and Women’s Studies, chair of Women’s Studies, and Director of the Center for Women’s Studies at Wichita State University, Wichita, Kansas. Her degrees in English, Theater, and African Studies, culminating in her postdoctoral at Cornell University on the poetics and politics of gender, inform her research on African masking. Her research on masking is interdisciplinary intersecting African orature, feminist and cultural studies with the organizing principle of masking as art in performance. She has numerous journal articles and edited volumes, including seven on African masking. She has authored eight books, including two on masking: Gender, Performance, and Communication – African Ikeji Mask Festivals Aro and Diaspora (2017) and Ikeji Festival Theater of the Aro and Diaspora: Gender, Mask, and Communication (2015).
