Dr. Sasha Kramer’s research aims on characterize surface ocean phytoplankton communities using a combination of in-water samples and remote sensing data on local to regional to global scales. From these surface ocean measurements, she investigates the implications of changing phytoplankton community composition (PCC) for broader biogeochemical cycles (e.g., the biological carbon pump and ocean carbon export) and in response to extreme events like coastal wildfires. Work in the Kramer Lab is highly interdisciplinary and combines oceanographic fieldwork, ocean color remote sensing, and lab work using optical and molecular tools. Current projects include NASA funding to investigate ocean carbon export from surface ocean conditions, ongoing investigations into the links between coastal wildfires and phytoplankton blooms (particularly harmful algal blooms), and new satellite algorithms to describe phytoplankton from space.
