This year’s theme

This year, we hope to explore the topic – #Borderless World: Redefining Human Connections. This topic aims to explore the civic, social, and psychological implications of today’s media landscape and social networks on and off the screen.

Emerging Media Studies is an inherently interdisciplinary field, and as such we welcome abstracts from a variety of disciplines on a range of topics centered around our conference theme.

Topics include, but are not limited to:

Analysis of online interest groups/discussion forums, communities, and their relationships as well as interactions within the digital space.
The role of social media in redefining the mediated human connection in terms of knowledge gain, information exchange, identify formation, and other related outcomes.
How emerging media technologies affect human interaction in different aspects of social life including politics, health, well-being, sociability and entertainment.
How human connections/connectedness vary between the virtual and real worlds, going beyond simple online vs. offline comparisons.
Self-presentation on social media and digital privacy concerns related to location- based advertising and in-real-life meetings.
How video games, virtual reality, and augmented reality alter (or do not alter) real-world human connection.
(Re)evaluating cross-cultural communication online and how that has been facilitated or diminished by the rise of streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, etc.

Going off from the rough explications of this year’s theme above, we offer the following tentative topics, the research papers under which are deemed eligible for submission. If there is any other relevant topic which we haven’t covered but you think is applicable, you are also more than welcomed to submit your research.
