Confronting the Costs of War Project
Project Description and Coding Rules
The Confronting the Costs of War Project (CCWP) provides data regarding interstate war finance. The war finance data set, which spans from 1823 to 2003, encompasses all interstate wars over six months whose participants are principal belligerents. Here you can find the codebook, which provides a war finance summary of each belligerent and accompanying citations, and the data set.
Initial descriptive statistics for the data can be found in Cappella Zielinski, R. 2016. How States Pay for Wars. Ithaca: Cornell University Press.
I would like to thank Boston University’s Center for Finance, Law & Policy for their support.
