For those of you had off last week, welcome back and sorry there wasn’t more Spring-like weather for those that remained local!  Hopefully, the warmer weather is here to stay!  And we hope you managed to get some sun and fun! 

 

I want to thank Maureen Richichi, MS, RN, School Nurse at the Lincoln School and Lincoln’s town Public Health Nurse, for the fabulous resources she has created to prevent tick-borne diseases.  She  generously shared these materials with school nurses across the state just in time for the upcoming Spring outdoor activities and field trips! A few reminders on upcoming deadlines, programs and events:

Update from Janet re:  requests for applications for registration for medication administration programs:  For those requests that have been received by April 13th ;  applications have been all been mailed as of April 20th.  Requests for applications received by DPH after April 20th will be processed beginning mid-May. (Janet will be away for the next 10 days).

 

A reminder that the May 15th conference on Racial Equity in School Health will be the final one for this school year.  This workshop will be held at Wheaton College in Norwood and ALL School Health Personnel are encouraged to participate…more information attached!  Other conference announcements (also attached)  include those sponsored by  Shriners Hospital on Emergency Management and  DESE Workshops for Safe and Supportive Learning Environments and Rethinking Discipline. And a reminder that the final two Domestic Violence – Sexual Violence Workshops sponsored by SHIELD and the MDPH School Health Services for this year will be held on May 2, 2018 in Holyoke MA and on May 16, 2018 on Westborough MA (Evening Program).  The presenter, Erin Miller, MPS, MDV, CTSS, CASAC-T, remains the only in-person instructor for this required training for all licensed health professionals.  And a final Introduction to SBIRT Conference will be held for this school year in June at the DoubleTree Hotel in Westborough, MA.  VFC Training Certificate Information: Please note that you will not receive a hard copy VFC certificate when attending an In-Person session. You will be emailed a pdf version of the VFC certificate within 3 business days of the session you attend. Please email Denise Henry (denise@adcare-educational.org) with any questions about the VFC certificate. Please contact the Immunization Assessment Unit at 617-983-4330 if you have questions about the annual VFC Compliance Training. If you are participating in the live VFC Compliance/Vaccine Storage and Handling webinar, you will receive a VFC certificate by email within 3 business days of the webinar.

 Conference Evaluations for CME/CEU: Please note that this year evaluations will be completed online and not in person at the sessions. You will receive an email 1-2 days after the session to complete an online evaluation. After completing the evaluation, you will receive an electronic continuing education credit certificate in approximately 2 weeks. RIGHTS, RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY SPRING 2018 TRAINING OF TRAINERS (TOT)

In partnership with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE), Advocates for Youth is hosting a free, two-day, skills-building Training of Trainers (TOT), thanks to generous private foundation funding, intended to increase the number of trainers available to train additional health education staff in MA. This TOT will have a unique focus on training teachers on issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity and highlight the rationale and strategies for creating an inclusive K-12 curriculum.  Please see the attached flyer for more information!


suAFTER A SUICIDE:  A TOOLKIT FOR SCHOOLS:

The Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) is pleased to announce the release of the second edition of After a Suicide: A Toolkit for Schools. Developed in collaboration with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) and in consultation with other national experts, this toolkit assists schools inimplementing a coordinated response to the suicide death of a student. It includes new information and tools that middle and high schools can use to help the school community cope and reduce suicide risk. The toolkit was developed primarily for school administrators and staff but can also be useful for parents and communities.

Highlights of the second edition include:

  • Updated information on topics such as memorialization, social media, and contagion
  • Updated resource lists
  • A new tool to help with decision-making about memorials
  • New examples of how different communities have addressed specific issues in responding to a suicide death


GOOD BEHAVIOR GAME AND LIFE SKILLS TRAINING:

Good Behavior Game and Life Skills Training will be held at the New England Institute of Addiction Studies Summer School in Worcester in June. See the attached notice related to registration for the Good Behavior Game; more information to follow on the Life Skills Training schedule.


MONTH OF THE MILITARY CHILD IS HERE!

April Is the Month of the Military Child:  Massachusetts is a member of the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3). The goals of the MIC3 are to ensure the timely enrollment and proper placement of students, as well as on-time graduation of children of military families. The Department is committed to providing support for the military-connected student who experience high mobility, resulting in educational interruption. People are invited to show their support by wearing purple on April 25!  Further information about this initiative and guidance can be found under the related resources section of DESE’s MIC3 webpage. Other resources available through MIC3 include a Guide for Parents, School Officials and Public Administrators


PROMOTING EFFECTIVE SEL IN YOUR COMMUNITY:

Join social-emotional learning proponents from across your region and discover approaches for developing an effective SEL plan for your school, district or community. Whether your community has been implementing SEL for some time or is just getting started, there are concrete steps that you can take to improve your effectiveness and results. At a SEL4MA regional event, you will:

  • Learn best practices and practical solutions for developing a comprehensive SEL plan;
  • Assess the current state of SEL in your community;
  • Connect with others in your region and share lessons learned;
  • Discover strategies for successfully advocating for SEL in your school, district or community;
  • Create an action plan outlining practical next steps to take back to your community;
  • Leave feeling informed, inspired and renewed.

The Cradle to Prison Pipeline is a well-documented phenomenon with disproportionate representation by people of color, individuals in poverty, and those with challenging behavioral, mental health and educational needs. This conference focuses upon an often “invisible” population in the pipeline, those with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). It will offer a description of FASD, review why individuals with FASD are more vulnerable to becoming court-involved and otherwise institutionalized, and discuss how to identify and support court-involved individuals with FASD.
