As a reproductive endocrinologist and physician-scientist, Dr. Kuohung has dedicated her clinical and research career to helping people have children. Her research focuses on disorders of pregnancy and the reproductive tract, placental development, and disparities in reproductive healthcare.

Why Women's Health?

Women common, especially at the intersection of other sociodemographics and social determinants of health, represent some of the highest risk groups for adverse brain health outcomes. For conditions, such as stroke and dementia, women are underrepresented in clinical trials and research shows that sex specific risk factors and treatment considerations are poorly understood.

Why Women's Health?

We all have about one million nephrons in each kidney to maintain our cardiovascular and kidney function and health to prevent many chronic diseases such as hypertension and cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome later in life. Women's health, especially maternal health, directly influences the birth weight and final nephron number in each kidney during kidney development in fetuses and newborns (i.e., nephron endowment), a key pathogenic factor for the Fetal Origins of Adults Disease (FOAD) and Developmental Origins of Health And Disease (DOHaD).

Why Women's Health?

I am a cancer epidemiologist focusing primarily on cancer risk and outcomes in Black women, who suffer a disproportionate burden of cancer in the U.S. I am currently Multiple Principal Investigator of the Black Women’s Health Study (BWHS), a prospective cohort study of over 59,000 Black women begun in 1995. Within the BWHS and other large, well-established cohorts, I have led high-impact epidemiologic research projects to study risk factors for breast and other cancers.

Females are vastly underrepresented in the research on the development hip structure in athlete, yet comprise nearly 2/3 of the clinical population with hip pain. We work to address the substantial research disparity between female and male athletes. The knowledge gained from our studies will lead to interventions to keep female hips healthy across the lifespan.
