About
Cities shape health, to the advantage of some residents and the detriment of others. The Research on Innovations for Safety and Equity (RISE) Lab at BU School of Public Health uses community-engaged research methods and data analysis to investigate the root causes of urban health disparities and associated health outcomes to identify solutions. We are especially focused on firearm violence and structural racism. Our work has informed policymaking in U.S. cities and has been covered by outlets like Newsweek, The New York Times, and CNN. The faculty co-directors of RISE Lab are Dr. Jonathan Jay, Associate Professor of Community Health Sciences at BUSPH, and Dr. Patrece Joseph, Assistant Professor of Community Health Sciences at BUSPH.
RISE Lab is supported in part by the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) 1K01MD016956, “Reducing violent injuries among American youth.” Previous support came from the Boston University Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) 1UL1TR001430.
