Founded in 2005,  Boston University’s annual Project Management in Practice Conference is chartered to:

  • Share the Project Management Body of Knowledge–as well as practical examples of project management best practices–with professionals throughout the region at an affordable cost.
  • Motivate and train young professionals in PM methods and best practices, and prepare them for certifications.
  • Provide a strong practical focus on behavioral science, communications, and soft skills as applied to PM in particular.
  • Attract industry practitioners, decision-makers, and new practitioners who want to improve their technical competencies.
  • Maintain an aspect of Agile and lean methods.
  • Recognize Boston-area professionals and organizations who make major contributions to their organizations through their practice of PM principles.

Themes of previous conferences have resulted in unique research bibliographies from the best researchers and practitioners in the field. Developing Project Management Competency (2015), Women in Project Management (2014), Stakeholder Management (2013), and Agile Project Management (2012), among others. The 2017 conference was a milestone event. It was integrated with IRNOP, the world’s premier project management research conference.

In PMiP 2021 we recognized that the pandemic brought about changes at home and work. Can project management best practices rescue organizations from the economic shock and provide opportunities to leverage through innovation? Can Agile Innovation practices help us do “twice the work in half the time?”

In PMiP 2022 we focused on Project, Program and Portfolio Management. A key focus at this event was to talk about the changes being brought about by the 7th Edition of PMBOK Guide and the new Global Standard. Gone are the 49 processes and the 1500 ITTO’s. Project Management as we know it is changing.

In PMiP 2023, we were one of the first conferences to address the emergence of Artificial Intelligence in the field of Project Management.
