Madeleine Scammell is a Professor of Environmental Health at Boston University School of Public Health and starting July 1, 2026 serving as Interim Associate Dean for Policy and Practice. Her research and teaching is focused on the human health effects of environmental pollution. Since 2017, she has been studying an epidemic of kidney disease in El Salvador and Nicaragua, identifying exposure to occupational heat as a risk factor. She also co-leads research on extreme heat in Massachusetts. Most of her work is community-based participatory research, including research in partnership with GreenRoots, a grassroots environmental justice organization Madeleine helped to establish in Chelsea, MA, where she lives. Madeleine also partners with Alternatives for Community & Environment, the Conservation Law Foundation and Slingshot on the Environmental Justice Assistance Network (EJAN). And since 2008, Madeleine has served on the Board of Directors of the Science & Environmental Health Network.
