Mobile & Electronic Health ARC’s Lightning Talks Event
ME-ARC Lightning Talks:
“Innovations in Digital Health Interventions"
November 20th, 2024, 11:00a - 1:00p
Instructional Building, 72 East Concord Street, Evans Seminar Room 112a
The ME-ARC held an event entitled "Innovations in Digital Health Interventions" to share ongoing research in digital health interventions, form new collaborations and reignite old ones, and identify next steps for the ME-ARC and digital health at BU. Twelve faculty members from both campuses and numerous departments (CAS, GSDM, Medicine, School of Public Health, Questrom, Sargent, Social Work, and VA Boston), presented 5-minute lightning presentations on their recent work. Following that, a group lunch and discussion ensued among attendees. The ME-ARC and symposium attendees will reconvene in January to operationalize future directions. We hope that this event will serve as a catalyst to continue to evolve the ME-ARC and digital health at BU. Please contact the ME-ARC if you would like to be involved.
About the ME-ARC: Founded in 2016 by Belinda Borrelli, PhD, the mission of the Mobile & Electronic Health ARC (ME-ARC) is to conduct transdisciplinary research and training with an emphasis on developing and testing digital solutions to improve health and wellness, particularly among disparity-facing populations. To foster collaboration, the ME-ARC holds monthly seminars, annual symposia, assesses BU digital needs through discussion groups and surveys, and provides consultation to BU researchers. The ME-ARC established a pilot funding program, which helped launch a number of collaborations and resulted in publications and funded grants.

Our first presenter was Dr. Susan Murphy, Professor of Statistics and Computer Science at Harvard Univerity. Her presentation was entitled “Challenges in Developing Online Learning Algorithms to Dynamically Personalize Mobile Health Interventions”.
Our second presenter was Dr. David Mohr, Professor in the Department of Preventative Medicine, and Director of the Center for Behavioral Intervention Technologies (CBITs) at Northwestern University. His presentation was entitled “Making Digital Mental Health Work in the Real World“.
See Dr. Murphy and Dr. Mohr's presentations by clicking on the links above.
Lastly, the Industry Panel focused on “Building and Maintaining Academic-Industry Partnerships”. On the panel was Scott Werntz, CEO of Agile Health; Dr. Alexander Bendayan, Clinical Associate Professor, Ad Interim Chair, and Associate Dean, at Boston University; Dustin DiTommaso, SVP of Mad*Pow; and Dr. Olga Elizarova, Founder of Play Collaborate Change, and the Research Applied newsletter.
Mobile and Electronic Health ARC 2nd Annual Symposium Press Release
The Mobile and Electronic Health ARC’s 2nd Annual Symposium was held on Thursday, November 2nd 2017 at Boston University. There were over 85 attendees at the symposium, including those from BU School of Public Health, BU Goldman School of Dental Medicine, BU Sargent College, BU School of Medicine, Boston Medical Center, Bedford VA, BU Hariri/ Sail Institute, Institute for Health Systems Innovation and Policy (IHSIP), Dimagi, BU Office of Technology, Harvard University, Brown University, MGH, and Cura Health. Opening remarks were provided by Dr. Belinda Borrelli, who is Director of the ME-ARC and Professor at Boston University, and Dr. Karen Antman, Provost for the BU School of Medicine. The symposium consisted of three presentations that covered a variety of electronic health platforms (apps, sensors, text messaging and social media) and health behaviors. The symposium concluded with a networking session and refreshments.

Dr. Donna Spruijt-Metz’s presentation was entitled, “mHealth4: Monitoring, Modeling, Modifying and Maintaining Health-Related Behavior Change in Real-Time.” Dr. Spruijt-Metz is a Research Professor and Director of the mHealth Collaboratory at the University of Southern California. Dr. Spruijt-Metz spoke about her research projects that involve mobile technologies to develop data sets that combine temporally dense and highly contextualized sensor and self-report data along with innovative modeling techniques to develop dynamic, individual mathematical models of health-related behavior. She was one of the first investigators to undertake just-in-time, adaptive intervention (JITAI) in youth.
The second presentation was entitled “Healthy Influencers? Social Media Use, Misinformation, and Health Behavior Change,” given by Dr. Jacob Groshek, Associate Professor at the BU College of Communications. He discussed the democratic utility of communication technologies and how use of both online and mobile media may influence sociopolitical and health-related changes. Dr. Groshek oversees the BUCAT, Boston University’s Twitter Collection and Analysis Toolkit, a software system that allows all BU affiliates to study social media approaches.
The third presentation was entitled, “Mobile Health in Two Populations: Addressing Chronic Disease Management Through Text Messaging," given by Dr. Keith McInnes, Associate Professor at the BU School of Public Health and Health Scientist at the Bedford VA. He discussed mobile health and applications of patient centered health informatics and quality of chronic disease health care across vulnerable populations.
