Tour at Rosie’s Place: Samantha Gaines
The Mahalingaiah Lab is dedicated to helping women who are medically underserved in Boston and beyond. This past week, a few of our lab members visited Rosie’s Place, the first women’s shelter in the United States, that provides meals, shelter, counseling services, and many other resources for poor and homeless women in the area. Lab member Jay Cheng works there part time as the evening Food Pantry Coordinator. Not only does the food pantry provide healthy food options such as brown rice, beans, whole wheat bread, and peanut butter, they also provide FRESH fruits, vegetables, dairy products, eggs, and meats – all year long! The fruit and vegetable portion of the cold room looks similar to that of a Whole Foods, and it is greatly inspiring that all of these items are donated by local farms and businesses that are also committed to helping the underserved population. It is important to consume multiple servings of fruits and vegetables each day, and we value Rosie’s Place in their mission to provide healthy and nutritious options to work poor and homeless women who don’t have the time or means to buy healthy options for themselves. Visit rosiesplace.org for more information and to find out how you can help.
