About

The Gentrification and Urban Displacement Lab (GUDL) at Boston University’s Initiative on Cities brings together researchers, policy-makers, practitioners, and advocates committed to understanding and addressing the forces of gentrification and displacement.

Through cross-sector collaboration, GUDL develops evidence-based strategies and policies to prevent displacement and promote equitable urban development. The Lab convenes diverse partners – from local communities to global networks – to share insights, co-create solutions, and seed fund projects that combine academic research, grassroots expertise, and policy innovation for measurable impact in cities.

GUDL is, at its core, community-engaged not only in Boston but also in cities across the U.S. and globally.

GUDL Goals

  1. To create bridges between local communities, researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and community organizers/activists that directly address existing research or translational gaps, thereby leveraging academic and non-academic research for policy and practice more effectively.
  2. To facilitate collaborative partnerships among local communities, researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and community organizers/activists who wish to enhance existing or develop new research projects in co-learning teams.
  3. To serve as a platform for exchanging impactful evidence, successful policies, best practices, and catalyzing further opportunities for anti-displacement policy, practice, and activism.
