Maria Mercedes Di Virgilio

Maria Mercedes Di Virgilio is a senior CONICET researcher at the Instituto de Investigaciones Gino Germani, Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her research interests include housing and urban policies in Latin American cities, spatial mobility practices (residential, daily, migration, and tourism), urban change, and gentrification. At the University of Buenos Aires, Di Virgilio served as Assistant Vice President for research from 2018 to 2019 and Associate Dean for research and graduate studies at the College of Social Sciences from 2014 to 2018. In addition, she has been a visiting professor at various universities in Latin America and abroad, including Universidade Federal da Bahia, Universidad Autónoma de México, Université de Poitiers, Institut des Hautes Études de l’Amérique latine, and University of Texas at Austin. While at Princeton, she worked on a research project that analyzed the construction of the field of urban studies in Latin America since the 1970s. Currently, Di Virgilio directs a project on spatial mobility practices of low-income and middle-income families in Argentine cities.
