Hyun Bang Shin

Professor of Geography and Urban Studies and former Director of the Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre, London School of Economics and Political Science

Hyun Bang Shin is a Professor of Geography and Urban Studies, Chair of the Department of Geography and Environment, and former Director of the Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre
at the London School of Economics and Political Science. His research centres on critical analysis
of the political economy of urbanisation, displacement, gentrification, and comparative urbanism with particular attention to Asian cities. His most recent projects include the urban agency of global China and the circulations of Asian urbanism. His books include
Planetary Gentrification (2016, Polity Press, co-authored with Loretta Lees and Ernesto LoĢpez-Morales), Neoliberal Urbanism, Contested Cities and Housing in Asia (2019, Palgrave Macmillan, co-edited with Yi-Ling Chen), Exporting Urban Korea? Reconsidering the Korean Urban Development Experience (2020, Routledge, co-edited with Se Hoon Park and Hyun Soo Kang), among others. Professor Shin is an editor of the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research and a trustee and treasurer of the Urban Studies Foundation. He also co-organises the Urban Salon: an interdisciplinary London forum for architecture, cities, and international urbanism.
