NRT Internship Requirements

Funded NRT trainees are required to complete one summer internship of approximately 12 weeks by August 31 of the applicable internship year. Internships may be local or non-local and can take place in a range of settings, including biotechnology, startups, scientific communication, education and outreach, policy, and other fields relevant to trainees’ interests. Trainees are responsible for identifying, applying for, and securing their own internships.

Internships may be paid by the host organization. If the host is unable to provide compensation, NRT funding may be able to support a trainee’s stipend during the internship. Please discuss compensation arrangements with your coordinator before accepting an offer. The program does not provide travel or relocation assistance, so trainees should consider any related costs when evaluating non-local opportunities.

Finding an opportunity

The organizations, programs, and resources listed below are examples to help you get started—not a comprehensive list, guaranteed placements, or endorsements. Trainees are encouraged to explore options that fit their interests and career goals, use their own networks, and pursue opportunities independently. Application timelines vary, so begin your search early and verify deadlines and requirements directly with each organization.

Consider reaching out about unposted opportunities

Some organizations may not advertise internship openings but may be open to discussing a short-term project or internship. If you’re interested in an organization, consider reaching out to introduce yourself, explain what interests you about its work, and describe how your skills might contribute. You can also explain the NRT internship requirement and mention the possible stipend support described above. A new opportunity isn’t guaranteed, but a thoughtful inquiry can start a conversation.
