Talk Title: Women of Color: Black, Blues & Jazz
The presentation will examine the lives of four women who overcame their position in life using music as the means. Talent was their way of rising above any persecution they experienced and their music is a glorious example of triumph over tragedy. The musicians are Florence Price (1888-1953), Margaret Bonds (1913-72), Zenobia Perry (1908-2004) and Mary Lou Williams (1910-1981). The presentation will include piano demonstrations of their works, a discussion of the specific harmonies & chord changes and references to their African heritage – all showing that these women were fearless in their determination to be original.
