The Conversation: Keeping it Alive!

February 25, 2018 | Tawnya D. Smith, Tess Nielsen, & Nicholas Patrick Quigley

Hello and welcome to the first blog post in The Conversation.

On September 15th and 16th of 2017, the Tanglewood Conversation took place on the campus of Boston University. This meeting of the BU music education family, successfully brought together current students, area educators, alumni, affiliated scholars, and faculty members in a supportive dialogue around key issues in our field. In an effort to keep alive the spirit of this event, we have created a new website and blog to promote further dialogue, as well as keep you informed of future events and related opportunities.

One important development that we want to share, is that the second of what will continue to be an annual event, will take place on September 14th and 15th of 2018. This event will be called, The Conversation on Music Education at Boston University or simply The Conversation. The name has been changed to clarify the location of the event, and to convey that Boston University is the sponsor. We are very excited to invite you to consider presenting at the event. We welcome a wide array of proposals from students, educators, musicians, and scholars. Please see the Call for Proposals for more details. Proposal submissions will be accepted through May 1st.

In addition to this conference, The Conversation will be ongoing right here, in this emerging online community of scholars, teachers, students, and advocates. Resources relating to Conversation presentations and additional blog posts will be made available through this website. We encourage you to dialogue around these resources and blogs to keep conversations progressing, and to further stimulate thinking and action in music education. If you would like to share your work, we encourage you to contact Tess Nielsen, who is the BU alum organizing our blog spot. We hope this will be an accessible platform for you to make your voice heard through the publication of your writing, arrangements, curricular materials, or other resources that may be useful to the music and music education community. This website will also be used to publish news and events relating to Music Education at Boston University, as well as events and updates specifically relating to The Conversation.

Welcome again to The Conversation. We look forward to hearing what you have to share.

Musically yours,

The Communications Committee Co-Chairs,

Tawnya D. Smith; Faculty Member, Project Leader

Tess Nielsen; Alumni Member, Blog Coordinator

Nicholas Patrick Quigley; Student Member, Web Designer

  1. I was delightfully surprised at just how thrilling the Conversation was last year. What an awesome experience to bring together so many in our BU community: students (on-line and on-campus, undergrads and grads); alumni; faculty; and administration. Our conversations were indeed enlightening and heart-warming. I’m so grateful to be a part of this community and I look forward to seeing everyone again next year. If you didn’t make it last time, please join us in September!
