TEAM Center launched

Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development and CPM Educational Program are proud to announce the launch of the Teaching Equitable and Ambitious Mathematics (TEAM) Center, a new partnership dedicated to transforming mathematics teaching and learning through research, professional learning, and community engagement. The Center officially launched on October 1, 2026.

Founded by CPM Educational Program and Boston University Wheelock College of Education & Human Development, the TEAM Center brings together CPM’s national expertise in mathematics curriculum and teacher professional learning with BU Wheelock’s strengths in research, mathematics teacher education, and educational leadership. “One of the most exciting aspects of the TEAM Center is that it brings together people who are often working toward the same goals from different parts of the educational system,” said Lara Jasien, Co-Director of the TEAM Center and Head of Research at CPM Educational Program. “Mathematics classrooms can be places where students develop confidence, curiosity, and powerful ways of thinking,” added Leslie Dietiker, Co-Director of the TEAM Center and Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at BU Wheelock. “By bridging research and practice, we aim to enable educators to create those opportunities for students every day.”

The TEAM Center was created to address a persistent challenge in mathematics education: while decades of research have demonstrated how students learn mathematics deeply and meaningfully, opportunities for all students to experience that kind of learning remain uneven. The TEAM Center seeks to bridge the gap between research and practice by studying the supports that enable educators, schools, and communities to create and maintain mathematics classrooms where students engage in rich problem solving, reasoning, communication, and collaboration.

The TEAM Center will serve as a hub for four interconnected areas of work:

  • Research that documents and studies equitable and ambitious mathematics teaching and learning;
  • Professional learning opportunities that help educators translate research into classroom practice;
  • Community-building initiatives that connect teachers, school leaders, researchers, and mathematics teacher educators; and
  • Documentation and dissemination efforts that share examples, resources, and research findings with audiences across the nation.

Among its initiatives, the TEAM Center will establish partnerships with schools in the Boston area in order to create and document “existence proofs” of equitable and ambitious mathematics instruction across diverse contexts. In addition, the center will pursue research projects focused on strengthening equitable mathematics instruction and assessment practices. Finally, it will build a regional network of mathematics teacher educators and school and district leaders to inform the work. By creating a sustainable ecosystem that connects research, curriculum, teacher professional development, and a network of math teacher educators, the TEAM Center aims to become a regional and national model for mathematics education improvement.

Penny Bishop, dean of BU Wheelock, said, “For too long, what we know from research about powerful mathematics learning has not reliably reached the classrooms where it matters most. The TEAM Center is our answer to that gap. With CPM Educational Program, we are building a hub where researchers and educators work together toward something even more ambitious than individual classroom change: the transformation of the systems that shape what mathematics teaching and learning look like for all students.”
