Getting Paid
The Student Employment Office lists paid jobs only. Pay for any job listed will be Massachusetts minimum wage or above. As of January 2023, the Massachusetts state and the University minimum wage is $15.00 per hour.
For Quick jobs and part-time jobs which are not listed in the On Campus section, you can expect to be paid directly by your employer. Boston University does not oversee these payments.
The Student Employment Office oversees payments for all jobs done on campus. You must complete your time sheet each week in order to be paid on time. You should work with your supervisor to establish a deadline by which your time sheet must be submitted. Your first paycheck will be available on the Friday following your first week of work. For example, if you work during 09/04-09/10, your check will be issued on 09/15. If you forget to enter your hours, or need to change them, you should contact your supervisor.
All physical checks are mailed to the student’s home address (domestic students), or local address (international students). All payments will be mailed until the authorization of direct deposit, instructions to which are below, or on the main Student Employment Office website.
Earnings from Work-Study jobs are paid directly to you; the University does not apply your earnings to your account balance or tuition bill. If you would like to make a payment on your account, please visit Student Link > Money Matters > Student Account Inquiry.
Accurately record all hours you have worked. Fraudulent reporting of hours worked is gross misconduct and will result in immediate termination, possible loss of financial aid, and referral to the Office of the Dean of Students for possible further disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion from the University.
Direct Deposit
Direct Deposit is a safe, convenient, and environmentally-friendly way to have your earnings automatically deposited into your checking or savings account. In order to apply for direct deposit, you must have access to the Employee Self-Service tab on BUWorks. This access typically becomes available to you once you receive your first paycheck.
Eligible students may enroll by selecting Direct Deposit Authorization on the Student Link Work tab. You will need your bank’s routing number and your bank account number. You can watch a video on how to apply for direct deposit. We also have step-by-step directions.
