Here are some suggestions of other data sets:

  • Current Population Survey (find by starting at IPUMS.org) – a national survey with more on working and work history.
  • The decennial Censuses (find by starting at IPUMS.org) for historical data
  • National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (latest 2015-6)  cdc.gov/nchs/nhanes/nhanes2015-2016/
  • NLSY A longitudinal survey that follows people over time and asks a lot of question. Start at www.bls.gov/nls/nlsy97.htm
  • ATUS American time use survey (find by starting at IPUMS.org/timeuse.shtml) … might be harder to use.
  • There are a bunch of data sets that people have posted on kaggle.com/datasets
  • National Survey of Family Growth
  • The Current Population survey which has a monthly survey of people from 1962 to the present.  See cps.ipums.org
  • Census data from across the world.  See international.ipums.org
  • Health data on women and children in the developing world. See idhsdata.org/idhs/
  • NSF data on scientists careers highered.ipums.org/highered/
  •  The National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) gives annual data from 1960s to the present. See ipums.org/healthsurveys.shtml
  • The American National Election Studies has data from surveys on voting, public opinions, and political participation (from 1948 to 2016!).  See electionstudies.org/
  • The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has health-related telephone surveys regarding health-related risk behaviors (15 states). See cdc.gov/brfss/index.html
  • World Bank Data has many different kinds of data on individual countries, particularly developing countries. Topics range from environment to gender to health to infrastructure to education to science to trades etc. etc. See data.worldbank.org
  • data.un.org  The UN has a world of data, from 35 databases….  included IMF’s international financial data, data on education, energy, environment, health, human development… See databases listed at data.un.org.  In many cases, the same data sets are available from the World Bank and the UN.
