Devika ~ BU ’17
Having the opportunity to be a part of AUB’s School of Humanitarian Engineering was an incredibly enriching experience both personally and professionally. We were welcomed to Beirut by faculty and students at AUB that were more than happy to show us their beautiful country – from exploring the ancient city of Byblos to feasting on mezze at Zaitunay Bay. Learning about the history of Lebanon, the policies the state has towards refugees, and the complex humanitarian aid system in the region demonstrated how nuanced the challenges refugees face are. By far, the experience I was most grateful for during our time there was being able to listen to the stories of families living in refugee settlements. We came away from our visit with a desire and commitment to do more in the humanitarian space.
