The BUSPH Population Health Data Science program is pleased to announce a new series entitled ‘Ask the Data Science Expert’. The purpose of this series is to provide an interactive opportunity for our community to learn more about a topic of interest in health data science through discussions and Q&A with an expert in the area.  Our first gathering will be Thursday, April 25th from 12-1PM, and will focus on the topic: Target Trial Emulation, with Dr. Sara Lodi, Associate Professor of Biostatistics at BUSPH, as our featured expert.

What is target trial emulation? Target trial emulation is a framework for using observational data to emulate a pragmatic randomized controlled trial to answer questions about the comparative effectiveness of interventions.

Why is it useful? By explicitly mimicking the design of a randomized controlled trial, researchers can provide stronger evidence for the causal effects of interventions in situations where randomized controlled trials are not feasible due to ethical, practical, or financial constraints.

Format:  This will be an informal discussion of two different real-world investigations using target trial emulation.  For each study, an investigator will first present a brief vignette describing their research scenario.  They will then have the opportunity to discuss their specific questions and issues on target trial emulation with Dr. Lodi, who will provide her guidance and input on the study.  Attendees are welcome and encouraged to be part of the discussion or to simply observe and learn more about the topic.
