Our Mission
BU Out in Stem (oSTEM) empowers LGBTQIA+ graduate students to succeed personally, academically, and professionally by cultivating community and promoting visibility. BU oSTEM is an organization for STEM graduate students at BU who identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ community. We hold diverse intersecting identities and experiences of race, class, age, ability, sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression. BU oSTEM events and spaces are for all of us, and we expect attendees to be respectful and inclusive of all identities, visible and not visible, to help us create an affirming environment where everyone is welcome as their whole self.
Our Vision
We envision a campus where LGBTQIA graduate students in the BU STEM community are empowered to achieve success in a safe and supportive environment that celebrates their diversity and unique contributions.
Our History
We began in the summer of 2018 as a small group of BU graduate students who convened over cupcakes to celebrate the first annual International Day of LGBT+ People in STEM. We felt that there needed to be special resources for LGBTQIA graduate students pursuing careers in the STEM departments at BU. Thus, we started meeting on a regular basis to find common goals and grow the strength of our community here at BU.
