Public Health – WHY, WHAT, HOW?

Public Health – WHY, WHAT, HOW?

The Maine Public Health Association is pleased to offer a three-part series designed to share information and talking points to help everyone understand The Why, The What, and The How of public health.

Talking about Public Health – Getting to WHY

We all know the technical, data-driven ways to talk about Public Health, but how can we make it emotional, real and accessible for the non-public health geek? Getting to Why reinforces the benefits and importance of public health in a way that resonates with almost any audience, forces us to think beyond the mechanics of what we do, and focuses on the impact and outcomes of our collective work. Dr. Dora Anne Mills, VP, MaineHealth will share her perspectives on how we can collectively increase awareness of all that public health does in our state.

Education vs. Lobbying – Getting to WHAT

What can and what can’t we say as we share information? What is the difference between helping to educate and inform vs. lobbying? What’s the most effective message and the best ways to deliver it? How do we determine who we should talk to? All of these are important questions, and being silent, while easier, isn’t the best way to advance public health. Jennifer Burns Gray, Director of Advocacy and Public Relations for the Maine Association of Nonprofits will offer tips and advice.

How Policy Changes/Legislative Rules Happen – Getting to HOW

Understanding how legislative rules are made and policy changes are implemented in the halls of state and federal government can help us better prepare for the impact of those rules on our work. While it may seem overwhelming, and indeed it is a different language, learning how to read and interpret “legislative speak” is key to helping us do our work more effectively and with fewer surprises. Lisa Miller, Senior Program Officer of the Bingham Program and a former Maine state legislator, will share information to help you stay informed.
