Subject | Biography, History, Gender, Women, Sufi Education, Muridiyya |
Content | The document deals with Soxna Faati Ja, the oldest daughter of Shaykh Ahmadu Bamba (1853-1927), the founder of the Muridiyya Sufi order of Senegal. She was born in 1878 in Mbakke-Kajoor and died in 1969 in Tuubaa (or Touba). The document shows that she was educated by Bamba and other scholars. Bamba personally gave her the same spiritual Sufi training (Tarbiyya) that he provided his male disciples. The document gives some details on the kind of Sufi training that Bamba’s disciples received. This included the ability to endure hunger, thirst and earthly suffering. It also indicates that Bamba provided the same spiritual training to men and women, and he expected all of them (including his own children) to be educated in Islam and to live by the Sufi ethos of the Muridiyya. Soxna Faati Ja’s commitment to the Muridiyya order and her contribution to the construction of the mosque of Tuubaa are also discussed in the document. Finally, the document makes clear the deep relationship that Soxna Faati Ja had with her father, but that she did not expect to be treated differently from his other disciples because of their closeness. |
