Title | Biography of Lady Aysatu Mbakke-Kajoor (Soxna Aysatu Mbakke-Kajoor) |
Author or Owner | Les Structures Soutenant l’Université du Magal (author) |
Subject | Biography, History, Gender, Women, Education, Murid Society |
Content | The document deals with the birth, upbringing, education, and virtues of Soxna Aysatu Mbakke, a daughter of Ahmadu Bamba. She was born in Patar in 1878 and died in Mbakke-Kajoor in 1914. The document highlights her closeness to her father, her moral virtues, and usefulness to people. According to the document, she was the first woman to serve as Shaykha (spiritual leader) in the Muridiyya. In the Wolof society, namesakes are believed to inherit seven qualities from those they are named after. Thus, many children in the Mbakke family are named after her so that they may emulate and inherit her character and virtues. In addition to serving as a biography of Lady Aysatu, the document also gives contemporary readers a glimpse of what kinds of feminine traits and virtues were deemed worthy of emulation in Murid society at the time. It notes how in addition to Lady Aysatu’s devotion to her father, to the Prophet and to scholarly learning and leadership, she continued to fulfill her domestic duties in both her own household and those of her male relatives. And finally, the document cements Lady Aysatu’s central role in Bamba’s family and early Murid society. |
