Author or Owner | Ahmadou Bamba Drame (owner), El-hadji Kawoussou Dramé (author) |
Subject | Politics, Legislative Election, Peace, Political Tensions, Senegalese Politics, President Abdou Diouf, Casamance |
Content | A poem in Mandinka Ajami written in the 1990s in the context of the lead up to a legislative election in Senegal. The author begins by calling for unity and peace for the country. He identifies himself as a supporter of Abdou Diouf, president of Senegal from 1981 to 2000, and lists local members of Diouf’s party who are running in the election. Then he describes recent local conflicts involving members of rival political parties. The poem is rich in metaphors appropriate for the pre-electoral context, such as, “The horse can run, but it does not know in advance which horse will arrive first!” The poem ends by lamenting the fact that children no longer respect their parents and urging children to be grateful. |
