Content | This document is a guide to divination using Muslim prayer beads. It is for use by diviners in foretelling important events or conditions for patients who come to them for guidance. The process relies on the patient reciting their needs before God before selecting a certain bead, after which the diviner counts the number of beads between the one they selected and the knot. The number between indicates the future of the patient. The guide contains predictions for each possible bead selection, with various conditions based upon the gender of the patient, their status in life, and certain economic or family events. The guide illustrates the kinds of services a Muslim cleric (marabout) might provide to those in their community, as well as the kinds of family and communal issues that frequently weighed on the minds of the people living in Ziguinchor during this time. These include marriage, family life, livestock, business ventures, travel, sickness and health, wealth, childbearing and menstrual cycles. |
