Content | The manuscript is a copy of the original, written in Mandinka Ajami. Foode Alaaji Daraame, the current owner, copied it in 1977. It is a biography of his great grandfather, Foode Heerebaa Daraame (1680-1775), who founded the town of Suunaa-Karantabaa, which is an important Mandinka Islamic learning center in Casamance. The document traces the origin of Foode Heerebaa to his birthplace in Manding (Mali); it shows his itinerary and the places where he stayed before founding Suunaa-Karantabaa. It also shows how his descendants spread in the Pakaawu area, building twenty-four mosques and founding towns and villages. It emphasizes the saintliness of these mosques as revered places where people seek prayers for their worldly and otherworldly matters. It also highlights the desire of Foode Heerebaa’s descendants to honor his legacy by constructing mosques and villages in his name. The document consists of a list of the twenty-four mosques, their founders, and the itineraries of Foode Heerebaa’s descendants as they traveled through the Pakawu area founding new villages. It concludes with a passage from the Quran remarking upon the importance of maintaining records of one’s ancestors and their deeds as both a form of justice to their memory and of personal pleasure. This manuscript is crucial for understanding the history of the Pakawu area as a center of Islamic learning. |
