Title | Enhancing Relationships 1 (Jokkere Enɗaŋ 1) |
Author or Owner | El Hadj Mouhamadou Sall (owner) |
Subject | Community Practices, Ceremonies, Religious Organizations |
Content | The documents talk about the activities of the Pita community in Dakar (people from the town of Pita in Guinea Conakry). There are a series of letters portraying the relationship between two communities: Pita immigrants in Dakar and those still in Pita in Guinea. They demonstrate in three instances how members of one community rally to help the other. The first letter calls the Pita immigrants in Dakar, Senegal to a meeting at the Sandaga Market. All people are urged to attend, showing to help build a mosque in Dakar for the Guinean community. The second letter is a call to help build a mosque in Pita, Guinea. Community members are urged to provide cement and corrugated metal sheets (or an equivalent amount of money). The third letter discusses personal connections between a migrant to Paris and a person in Dakar. Another letter features a man thanking the Guinean Pita community for his baby’s naming ceremony. The baby was born while he was overseas. The community organized a ceremony for his baby and mother back home. The fifth and final letter shows how Ajami texts contain political discussions as well, as the writer cautions others from engaging with the Guinean Ambassador to Senegal, who favors a different political party. These letters convey how actions and relationships are built between both Pita communities in Senegal and Guinea, and how migrants maintained important ties to their home communities in a variety of ways. |
