Rebecca Shereikis is the associate director of the Institute for the Study of Islamic Thought in Africa (ISITA) at Northwestern University. She has a PhD in African history from Northwestern; her research interests include colonial legal institutions, African Muslim responses to colonialism, and Islamic law in West African contexts. She has conducted research in Mali and Senegal on how inhabitants of western Mali navigated the legal terrain established by the French colonial state in the early twentieth century. At Northwestern, she also works closely with the Herskovits Library of African Studies on projects related to their collection of Arabic and Ajami manuscripts from West Africa.
