Margaret Rowley is a PhD candidate in ethnomusicology at Boston University. Her dissertation examines ethical community-building and sound practices in the Layeen community in Dakar, Senegal. Margaret’s academic interests include Sufism and Islamic sung prayer, state secularism, women and feminism(s), and affect and the senses. She holds a BM and MM in flute performance and an MA degree in ethnomusicology from Michigan State University, where she wrote on women DJs in Chicago’s house music scene. Other previous work has focused on Islamophobia and sonic torture in Guantanamo, and Muslim migrant communities in France.
