Lori De Lucia is a visiting researcher in the African Studies Center at Boston University. She received her PhD in African History from UCLA and a BA in Anthropology and African Studies from Boston University. Her current research looks at early modern slave trades in the Mediterranean, with a focus on enslaved West Africans in Sicily. She is interested in how the study of race and slavery in the early modern Italian context can inform contemporary issues of migration, citizenship and human trafficking in the Mediterranean. She spent two years studying and working in Niamey, Niger and has taught the Hausa language at Boston and Harvard University and produced videos for the African Voices Project and the Boston University African Language Program.
