On April 16, 2021, the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future, an affiliated center of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University, hosted a webinar exploring the demographic trends of rising powers and superpowers. The event was part of the Rising Powers Initiative (RPI), a new research program at the Pardee Center.
The event featured Jennifer D. Sciubba, Stanley J. Buckman Professor of International Studies and Department Chair at Rhodes College, as well as Joseph Harris, BU Assistant Professor of Sociology, and was moderated by Mahesh Karra, Pardee School Assistant Professor of Global Development Policy.
The panel discussed the unique economic and social challenges facing rising powers as they transition to aging states. They addressed key questions raised by these demographic changes, including: what will be the political and international security implications of these demographic trends over the next several decades, and what role will the politics of global health and health care expansion play in these rising powers’ efforts to improve their positions in global status hierarchies?
