Barry grew up as a pacifist, largely because her father was a pacifist.  She saw her father struggle with his stance towards military activities during WW II and tried to understand his evolving position.  She and Jim began their marriage as staunch pacifists.  As she describes in this section, they changed their position during Indian Independence, when they acknowledged the role Christian troops from Kerala played in quelling violence between Hindus and Muslims.
