Barry remembers first meeting James P. Alter when she was in college attending a New England Student Christian Movement conference in Northfield, MA. They wouldn’t become a couple until after Jim’s release from prison in Danbury, CT, where he served a 3-month sentence for refusing to register for the draft during WW II. In this section, Barry talks about her first impressions of Jim, his diabetes, their courtship and marriage, and the shared principles that would become the foundations of their life together.
