Branding Guidelines (Online)
Future Brand Evolution
Creative Directors for Interactive & Marketing Design are presently initializing a project to transition BU’s visual brand to something more consistent across all schools, websites, and printed materials.
This means standardizing our core elements—like fonts, colors, and design components—so everything feels more “BU” without losing what makes each group unique.
We’ll be reviewing past projects, creating clear guidelines, and documenting the new approach.
General Branding Guidelines
Please make sure you’ve consulted the official BU Brand website and our BU Brand overview ahead of proceeding with this section.

BU Brand Overview
The traditional default font for body copy of BU’s websites has been Benton Sans.

Header Masterplate Usage
There are occasional instances where a site design’s header requires that the Boston University Masterplate replace the Boston University logotype on viewports larger than 768px.
External-facing Prospective Student Sites
Unless the client specifically asks for the BU Masterplate lockup during feedback from the Strategy/Planning phase of a project — the aforementioned lockup only applies to websites for an individual or an office/department that’s intended for a prospective undergrad or Grad student audience who aren’t already admitted to BU.
Until an option has been developed into the BU Brand plugin, or our forthcoming responsive framework update, it must be included by manual CSS code if designated for the applicable site.
The general principle for it’s appearance is for it to appear in the header [in place of the bold Boston University default logotype option.]
[A lone exception was made were for Office of Research.]
