Nambiquaras in Paris: Archival Images, Appearances and Disappearances

While following the material and symbolic trajectory of these photographs, this talk offers a contextualized reading of their existence in different archives, historical moments, and cultural contexts. From the heady atmosphere of Paris in the 1920s with its assortments of colonial exhibits, ethnographic displays, and avant-garde appropriations of “primitive” art, to contemporary Rio de Janeiro made tense by economic crisis, social conflicts, and turbulent politics, these images evoke a past of scars, legacies and aspirations.
