HISTORY & OUR MISSION

HMSA was founded in the Summer of 2017 by HCM MPH Candidates who were passionate about healthcare management and wanted to improve professional opportunities for SPH students.

Our mission is to promote healthcare management-related programs and events within BUSPH, provide resources beyond the academic setting to increase professional and career development opportunities, and encourage engagement within the BUSPH Healthcare Management student community, alumni network, and greater Boston area.

MEET THE HMSA EXECUTIVE BOARD (Fall 2018)

Kayla BrooksKayla Elyse Brooks, President:

Kayla is a second-year MPH candidate concentrating in Healthcare Management. She grew up in Lake County, Florida and Plattsburgh, NY. She earned a B.S. in Biological Sciences with concentration in Neurobiology and Behavior from Cornell University. After graduation, she became a laboratory manager at Cornell and performed research on human cancer and genetic disease. She previously interned at UMass Memorial Health Center as a lean management consultant for improving patient flow in the Emergency Department. She is currently interning at Boston Medical Center within the Accounting department. Her healthcare management interests stem from improving patient-centered care, specifically for mental health services. Outside of BUSPH, Kayla enjoys singing, painting, going to concerts and getting outside!

emilyEmily Guan, Internal Vice President:

Emily is a second year Master of Public Health candidate with a concentration in Healthcare Management. She is originally from Virginia and completed her bachelor’s degree in Health Services Administration at James Madison University. Prior to moving to Boston for graduate school, Emily pursued her career as a Project Coordinator at the University of Virginia Medical Center in the Department of Radiology & Medical Imaging. During her time at UVA Medical Center, Emily learned and gained valuable experiences through a wide array of projects relating to finance, strategic planning, marketing, and human resources. The culmination of education and experiences have led Emily to have special interests in health care quality and process improvement, strategic planning, and operations. On the side, Emily also enjoys traveling, photography, experimental cooking and baking, trying different cuisines and coffee shops, and chatting with people.

jasmin SamanoJazmin Samano, External Vice President:

Jazmin is an MPH candidate pursuing the Healthcare Management Certificate. She received her B.A. in Political Science and Public Health from the University of California Los Angeles while working at the UCLA Department of Pediatric Neurology. After completing her undergraduate degree, she worked at Kaiser Permanente as a Population Management Support Coordinator focused on Chronic Care Management and staff on-boarding. Jazmin’s work experience inspired her to pursue a leadership position in the field with the aim of restructuring healthcare delivery to be tailored to each patient’s individual needs. Currently, she is working as a Health Systems Specialist Trainee at VA Boston System Intern alongside the Director of Quality Improvement. On her spare time, Jazmin enjoys exploring new dessert spots, watching the latest movies, and dog walking.

Nikita AroraNikita Arora, Finance Chair & Secretary:

Nikita is a second year MPH candidate pursuing a certificate in Healthcare Management. She grew up in Chicago, IL and earned her B.S. in Biological Science with a minor in Business from The Ohio State University. After graduating she worked as a Research Coordinator/Lab Manager for a neuroscience lab at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine for two years before coming to BUSPH. She enjoys dancing, exploring Boston, dogspotting  and meeting new people. During her time in Boston she has worked as an administrative assistant for the department of medicine at Boston Medical Center, acted as a lean management consultant for UMass Memorial Hospital and interned in the quality improvement/managed care department within the Pediatric Physician’s Organization at Boston Children’s Hospital.  Each project worked on within these teams focused on enhancing patient centered care through process improvement and strategic development. Edward LaiEdward Lai, Outreach Co-Chair:

Eddie is a second-year MPH candidate pursuing certificates in Healthcare Management and Pharmaceuticals. He graduated from Drexel University in Philadelphia with a bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences and a minor in Health Services Administration. Before coming to Boston, he previously worked at Penn Medicine and served with AmeriCorps in a West Philadelphia high school. For his practicum, he worked in the Knight Cardiovascular Institute of Oregon Health & Science University as an administrative intern in the OHSU Summer Internship Program. He is especially interested in seeing how technology integration and big data can impact healthcare into the future. In his free time, he enjoys biking, watching movies, and cheering for the Philadelphia 76ers. Edward is continuously looking for ways to make the most out of everything that Boston University School of Public Health has to offer, so if you see him, please say hello!

Marcquan Paris, Communications Co-Chair:

Marcquan is a current second year MPH student concentrating in Healthcare Management and Global Health. He grew up in New Rochelle, NY and received a B.S. in Biology with a double minor in International Business and Spanish from Quinnipiac University. This past summer he worked as a marketing intern in developing nationals at Pfizer Inc. He intends to work with NGO’s and the government to improve health outcomes of people in developing nations. In his free time he likes to shop and travel.

Abhishek ThakkarAbhishek Thakkar, Communications Co-Chair:

Originally born and raised in India, Abhishek has finished his medical education from B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, India. While working as an intern physician in a tertiary care teaching hospital, Abhishek understood how important is it to provide cost effective and quality healthcare services to the patients. With his passion to learn the administrative aspect of healthcare delivery, he is currently pursuing his Master of Public Health (MPH) from Boston University School of Public Health (BUSPH) with a certificates in Healthcare Management and Global Health. Abhishek did his summer internship (practicum) at World Health Organization Regional office of Europe located in Copenhagen, Denmark. He intends to pursue a career as a consultant to hospitals, Governments and/or global NGOs to give them technical support for various healthcare projects, especially in underserved areas. He currently works as a graduate tutor and peer writing coach at BUSPH writing center in the Talbot building. In his free time, he likes to read books and travel.
