Alcohol Use Patterns Project

Family and Environmental Influences of Alcohol Use – Examining 25 Years of Follow-up Data in a Nationally Representative Cohort of Youth
This study uses previously collected longitudinal cohort data from a national survey of youth to examine patterns of alcohol use over time. The hope is to apply new methods to identify long-term patterns of alcohol use and binge drinking in this cohort of youth as they age from their early teens (12-15 years of age) into their mid-30s. We are curious to learn how drinking changes as young people mature and move through different life phases. We are also investigating the role of family relationships and environmental factors such as alcohol policies on alcohol use throughout this time period. A better understanding of alcohol use patterns and key influences during adolescence may help inform harm reduction interventions.
