Partner with us!

We are currently seeking school and program partners to host our research study about vocabulary learning in monolingual or bilingual English speakers ages 5 – 9! The goal of our study is to understand how language experience and language ability influences learning processes that support vocabulary development.

As a thank you for partnering with us, we will donate bilingual paperback books for your student library! We hope to increase your students’ vocabularies—in English and Spanish—with these colorful and easy-to-read bilingual books.

We can also discuss opportunities for our team to provide workshops and presentations on language development and/or our research findings for staff and parents!

What is involved in hosting our study?

We will provide a letter to parents detailing our study and protocol. This letter will contain an attached consent form. We ask that schools send and collect our consent forms in backpack mail. We also require a small quiet space in your school for our team to work with students.

What is our protocol?

We meet with each child individually 1 – 2x for about 30 minutes. For bilingual children, we test their abilities in English and Spanish. Sometimes this requires an additional session.

Our protocol may include the following:

• Hearing Screening – children are asked to press a button when they hear a ‘beep’.
• Standardized Language Assessment – children are asked to point to and describe pictures.
• Narrative Assessment – children hear a story and retell the story using a picture book.
• Measures of Executive Function Skills – children’s ability to pay attention, sort pictures, remember information, and ignore distractions may be tested.
• Word Learning Games – children are asked to learn and remember new words for novel objects!

Children who participate will receive stickers and a paperback book as a reward for participating.
